So you have some non-stick pots and pans that you just bought, but you don't know exactly know how to make sure that they have the longest lifespan possible. Or maybe you're a pots and pans veteran who is looking for some helpful tips. Either way, you've come to the right place! To get the best professional advice on this subject, we talked to the director of Bon Appetit Homewares, Charul Gupta, to hear her tips and tricks on keeping your dishes well cared for.
1. Avoid Strong Heat
To prolong your pots and pans life time, you should avoid especially strong heat from flames. Charul tells us that medium to low heat is best on a regular cooktop.
2. Use Silicone and Wooden Utensils
"Treat your non-stick kitchenware like you treat your skin. When you use harsh scrubs on your skin, you will make the area rough and dry. In the same way, when you use harsh utensils on pots and pans, you mark its coating. Silicone and wooden utensils such as spoons and spatulas should be used for your pots and pans in a very gentle manner in order to prolong its lifespan," says Charul. Well said!
3. Avoid Dishwasher Use
Surprisingly, you should avoid putting your non-stick pots and pans into the dishwasher. Why? Well, according to Charul, the non-stick abilities of your kitchenware is through a coating that is been externally applied on top of the pot or pan. When put in the dishwasher, this external coating is removed, or at the very least, damaged. Hand washed is the best option.
In summary, you can take good care of your non-stick pots and pans by avoiding strong heat, using silicone and wooden utensils, and avoiding dishwasher use. This way, you can be confident that they are lasting the longest time possible and in the best condition.
